ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

The Practice-based activity, divided into four sections, gives new meaning to the way we approach pharmacy compounding and process day-to-day decisions related to patient care. This activity (section 1) will modernise a compounding practice by affording participants the opportunity to design futuristic compounding facilities that takes the efficiency and effectiveness of a compounding facility to a new level, ensuring operator, public and patient safety. Participants will be introduced to Federal and State regulations as well as their respective standards of practice related to USP, NIOSH (American), CCOHS (Canadian), WHS Regulations and Codes of Practice (Australian).

This activity (section 2) takes on the challenge of designing a most significant and clinically-based collaborative strategy that will redefine the pharmacist, physician and patient relationship. Participants will develop niche market specific collaborative clinical assessment profile templates for the compounding of individualised dosage forms. This will help solidify relations and bring a clinical superiority to the patient care challenge.

This activity (section 3) provides new meaning to a drug delivery system. Research outlining a novel concept in bioavailability optimisation for poorly absorbed drugs is presented; delivery systems for oral, rectal and topical dosage forms are presented.

Finally, this activity (section 4) responds to an all important aspect of pharmacy care; quality compounding is reviewed through an in-depth assessment of the efficacy, reliability and validity of finished preparations through the practicing of pharmaceutical calculations, personnel performance assessment, and process validation, all of which reinforces and helps to ensure the stability, potency, integrity and safety of non-sterile compounded preparations.

ACTIVITY DESIGN

A highly interactive live event with group work. The activity will include a series of assessments to ensure our appropriate delivery and dissemination of information, and subsequently your successful learning and competency.

OVERALL LEARNING OBJECTIVES OF LIVE ACTIVITY

  1. Summarise essential elements and design parameters for a futuristic non-sterile compounding pharmacy.
  2. Assess various non-sterile compounding pharmacy facility design models; simple, moderate and complex.
  3. Evaluate and critique the design of a multi-dimensional non-sterile compounding pharmacy.
  4. Apply new variables that strengthen and redefine the triad relationship between pharmacist, physician and patient.
  5. Design and construct a collaborative clinical assessment profile for compounding using the critical elements for compounding.
  6. Develop and design a niche market-specific collaborative clinical assessment profile specific to compounding.
  7. Critique the effectiveness and relevance of elements of a collaborative clinical assessment profile.
  8. Review clinical research that addresses novel approaches to delivering drug agents that are poorly absorbed.
  9. Redefine, and then reconstruct drug delivery systems from a novel perspective for oral, rectal and topical routes of delivery; the therapeutic goal being bioavailability optimisation.
  10. Identify methods to ensure the efficacy, reliability and validity of finished compounded preparations.
  11. Support the key elements of pre- and post-drug formulation validation processes and procedures through pharmaceutical calculations.
  12. Identify methods to ensure appropriate personnel performance through process validation.
  13. Discuss the methods you would use to ensure stability, potency, integrity and safety through testing of finished compounded preparations.

You may be eligible to apply self-directed learning credits to this Training Activity, which is not officially accredited.

Mark Filosi is a compounding pharmacist for a thriving non-sterile and sterile practice with over 15 years of experience. He is a co-owner of Family Care Pharmacy in Plant City, Florida and is responsible for the sales and marketing of the compounding segment of his business. His compounding practice ranges from non-sterile hormone preparations to high-risk intrathecal preparations. He graduated ‘cum laude’ from Fitchburg State College in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and then went on to graduate ‘cum laude’ in Pharmacy from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston, Massachusetts. Today, Mark is a preceptor for Florida A & M University.

COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS

Activity participants must be in attendance for the entire live event and complete an activity evaluation as compulsory requirements to achieve credit for the live event.

This activity is independent of any known bias, prejudice or commercial interest. Both MEDISCA Australia and LP3 Network Inc. assist with the marketing of this activity. LP3 Network Inc. is an independent corporation. LP3 Network Inc. has an established agreement with MEDISCA Australia ensuring that it has no influence on LP3 Network Inc. as it relates to activity offerings.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

An unrestricted educational grant has been provided by MEDISCA Inc. toward the purchase of electromechanical equipment, reusable and disposable devices, protective and safety supplies, and chemicals specific to compounded medications prepared during laboratory sessions.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS

Special rates for hotel accommodations have been arranged for activity participants. Payment for hotel accommodations is at the expense of the activity participant.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE

As a matter of activity programming, meals and refreshments during live activities have been provided by MEDISCA Australia.

CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY

A written request must be sent to MEDISCA Australia requesting a ‘Cancellation without Transfer’ to an alternate live activity event date. If cancellation occurs at greater than or equal to 31 days from the live activity event date, then the registrant will receive a 75% refund; 15-30 days is a 50% refund; and less than or equal to 14 days will result in no refund.

TRANSFER POLICY

The transfer policy is only in effect if requested less than or equal to 15 days post original live activity event date. Failure to submit the “Transfer Request” within 15 days post original live activity event date will default to the “Cancellation and Refund Policy”. The transfer policy can only be applied one (1) time. Transfer to a new live activity event date must be within the current calendar year. Failure to attend the new live activity event will result in no refund and will no longer be transferable. Confirmation of the new activity date is subject to approval by MEDISCA Australia based on the number of available seats within the selected live activity event.
